The raw material for this remarkable creation is clay, exclusively found in Fes City, particularly in a designated area known as “Ben Jellik.” The process begins by carefully transporting the clay to this location, where it is left to dry for 20 days. Once dry, it is shattered into smaller fragments using a large hammer and left to dry further for an entire day before being immersed in water for two days. Skilled workers meticulously cleanse the clay of any unwanted impurities, allowing it to be passed on to the next stage. This unique process is exclusive to Fes City, owing to its close affinity with the sun’s influence.
Artisans then take charge of shaping the clay into various forms such as flower vases, jars, and plates, utilizing their inherited craftsmanship. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted, carrying with it a legacy passed down through generations. Following the shaping process, the handmade creations are carefully placed in a kiln and subjected to temperatures of 2000°C for eight hours. Subsequently, the products are adorned with the vibrant hues of good fortune, drawing inspiration from dining tables and wall decorations.
Natural-based colors derived from organic resources are exclusively used for painting clay pieces. Artisans employ paintbrushes crafted from horses’ hair and skillfully apply colors such as blue, red, and black. To add a lustrous finish, the products are coated with a special substance before being returned to the kiln for an additional eight-hour baking process on burnt wood. This meticulous treatment ensures the durability of the painted surfaces, allowing them to withstand everyday use, whether with hot or cold liquids.
Transitioning to Zellige, the clay undergoes two rounds of baking. During the first firing, and subsequently, with the application of paint, the pieces are handed over to a skilled artisan known as Nekkach. It is Nekkach’s expertise to determine the specific pattern and placement of the Zellige, drawing inspiration from ancient references such as Karaouiyn and the grand palaces of the kings. With meticulous precision, Nekkach arranges the Zellige tiles in a captivating geometric arrangement, creating a visually stunning design.
Finally, a material called “La resin” or “cola sima” is applied to the Zellige, after which it is left to dry. Once dry, the tiles are carefully flipped to reveal the mesmerizing Zellige patterns on the front. This intricate process truly showcases the remarkable artistry of clay in the city of Fes.
